Officer Rick Benson

Officer Rick Benson has been with the Fort Worth Police Department for 22 years and holds a Master Police Officer Certificate. Officer Benson has been nominated for Officer of the Year on numerous occasions and in 1998 was honored with this award as the South Division Officer of the Year. He has been assigned to several units during his tenure including Uniform Patrol, K-9 Unit, Directed Patrol, Community Policing Unit, The Major Crimes Section and The Violent Personal Crimes Section. Officer Benson is currently a part of The Violent Personal Crimes Sections in the Sexual Assault Unit and focuses on the enforcement of registered sex offenders who are out of compliance.

During his career, he has developed vast experience in investigating street level crimes and crimes against persons. His investigative experience and insight into sexual predators combined with extensive training gives him a unique perspective of violent criminal offenders and their behaviors.

In 2004 Officer Benson developed the Personal Situational Awareness program in an effort to help women learn to recognize and respond to warning signs and behaviors of an abusive relationship or violent encounter with a stranger. Officer Benson is passionate in his belief that frequent warning signs of violent behavior are present in relationships but are often ignored, minimized or explained away. Failure to acknowledge and react to these warning signs will result in violent assaults and often death.

In 1999, he was the lead investigator in the Wedgwood Baptist Church shooting where Larry Ashbrook shot 14 people killing 7. Detective Carroll successfully obtained confessions from suspects in the high profile cases of Laura Crane and Lisa Underwood.
